President's Column: March 2010
This past month we have been overloaded with stories of winning performances. Some individuals tabbed as the underdogs doing the unthinkable … finishing first. Other athletes being the favorites achieving what the so-called experts had predicted … winning. The media has related some incredible stories designed to shape our opinions about the lives of strangers. Everyone loves winners especially when we are saturated with all of the inspiring stories. How can anyone not think these people are so special? They are people who really have it all. They are great! Right?

Can and should we idolize these “winners”? I can truly say that many of the winning performances were inspiring. They were unbelievable. I am sure many will dream that they are doing those winning feats on ski runs, ice rinks and other game venues around the world. What if the athletes hadn’t won? What if there was no media hype? Would we think these people are superhuman? Who really are these people?

One only has to look at the news to be reminded of flaws in the lives of some of our beloved athletes. Think for a moment about Tiger Woods. What a mess he made of his image, “the perfect man, husband and father”. Who created this persona? Tiger, the media, and his fans. He is a human being just like everyone else who makes mistakes. He is not superhuman, only his feats on the golf course are. Time will tell whether he can overcome his problems and truly become a good husband and father. How he handles this difficult time will show his true character, which only God can judge.

Let us just appreciate the accomplishments for what they are and not attempt to make people more than they are.

Shalom,

Dan Sarasin
Co-President
